Just got an email from a visitor to our weekly food distribution site and want to share it with you.

Dec 18 2020

Just this morning, a group of us were assisting our partners at a food distribution event. We saw faces of hunger. But we also saw volunteers hard at work, sorting out food, and standing in the cold putting boxes of food into the trunk of each vehicle in the long drive through. We thought we saw angels at work.

Then we saw an old grandma on her bicycle, and volunteers were helping her “load up” bags of food onto her bike. We were all worried if she would be safe riding the bike with so many bags. She told me she has been coming to the site week after week since May to bring food home to feed her family.

She said (with broken English but lots of hand gestures) that it would take her 12 minutes to cycle to the church where the food distribution is, and then another 12 minutes back home.

I asked her how old she is. She gestured with her fingers again, “67”, she indicated. But in January, she said she would turn 68.

“You look so young!” I shouted in disbelief, but I was not sure if she understood me. Then she gave us all one of the most beautiful smiles we have ever seen, before riding off. She was bringing home nutritious food to fill up the tummies of her loved ones.  She has many reasons to smile.

Thank you, to so many of you who bring up the true spirit of Christmas. You provide food, hope, joy and optimism to those in need. But please keep safe and take care of yourselves while out there serving others.

This is a season of food and hope. Thank you
